From time to time I will run a few random optimization checks on my pages to make sure
that everyone who calls up my pages will be able to see them in a reasonable amount of time.
(With-in at least 20-30 seconds TOPS for dial up users or better).
Here is what I found this morning doing an ebay page of mine.


My HTML when loaded to ebay, and with all their over blotted carp on the page:

I know this has been discussed before on many forums but it seems that ebay
with all there attempts to "enhance" the user experience has all but cut out
a large segment of the online buying world.
It is as if eBay thinks every one is on a T-1  / cable or better.

Hey ebay ever STOP to think about all those poor souls still on dial up?
It's no wonder so many have just pointed their browsers elsewhere.

eBay is bad, but Overstock Auctions is twice as bad for "over blotted carp on the page"

47% of people (in the US) are still using dialup, but 69% of online sales are by broadband users.  47% is a very large market to ignore/neglect/annoy/drive away.

What a mess. That's a lot of errors. So if anyone wonders were all those bidding wars and buyers went. A BIG portion of the problem may very well be the fact that so many get all those errors as well and I know for sure no one on dial up is going to wait more that 30 seconds for a page to load. So in essence, we are NOT really getting our money's worth from ebay.
No ownder so many of us only use them to help drive traffic to our sites.

47% still on DIAL UP???? Wow that is higher than I though but does not suprise me.

Its a lot of errors, and I'm sure it is one of the main reasons people who don't update their browsers regularly have trouble using the site without their browsers constantly crashing.  The average buyer isn't going to take the time to "clear their cache and reboot" and spend the necessary minutes/hours reconfiguring their computer so it will work with eBay, instead they are just going to head off to a site that works like Amazon, Yahoo Shopping, web site stores, etc.

Drug testing and IQ testing couldn't hurt 'em either! 
I think when McDonald's drive through employees master the drive up window, they are promoted to eBay.
