Nikki,
I have no clue what is wrong but I do suggest if you can afford it to just get rid of dial up and go for cable. Both my phone company & cable service offer this service. Will probably cost you $30-$40 but well worth the money if you are running on line businesses. I could not imagine doing all this work on a dial up connection.

I second that. I simply have NO PATIENCE WHATSOEVER with dial-up. I got rid of it many years ago, and haven't regretted one nanosecond of kissing that turtle good-by. I cringed about paying more money, as I'm cheaper than Jack Benny, but I figure my sanity has some value. Even DSL wasn't fast enough for me. CABLE ALL THE WAY!
What ISPs offering cable are in your area? Cox? Comcast? I have Comcast (it used to be Adelphia before Comcast bought it out) and have both TV and internet connected. Lots of cool features, like On-Demand channels and everything else I love to watch, like the Discovery Channel, History Channel, Science Channel and a cool new one called MoJo. I do alot of overseas calls to relatives so have Vonage as my phone service and my phone bills run about $17/mo.
No service is perfect. Lightening often strikes down my cable, but I don't have to pay for tech support or service. I think it's that way with any cable company.

Hello everyone....
I haven't had time to read any posts since I last posted as I have lost my internet connection. I am coming here in hopes that someone might be able to help me, as I know many of you have much more computer knowledge than I do. Since last week we have been trying to get online from our home computer and haven't been able to (I'm at the library now.) Our ISP is Juno (was recommended by a relative when we didn't know anything at all about the internet)....when we try to connect or check emails, we are able to dial up, but as soon as we make a connection we are disconnected and an error message pops up. We have tried using our other computer and the same thing happens, so we know it is not our computer or modem. Unfortunately Juno's tech support is $1.95 per minute! Do any of you happen to know what might be wrong and what we can do to fix this?
We are also looking at switching to another ISP. Any recommendations? Any in particular to avoid? Would prefer one that doesn't charge for telephone tech support if that is available? What is the cost of any that you recommend (we need dial up service)?
Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can give. I'll check back in a couple of days when I can get back to the library again.

(It's making me crazy not being able to work on my stores! Can only use a library computer for a 1/2 hour and that sure goes fast! Gotta go, my time is up already.)

How frustrating! I assume you have no choice but to use dial-up, that cable/hi-speed is not available in your area. Here's my suggestion although it's been a long time since I've been on dial-up.
Next time you are at the library go to the website of your ISP. Surely they have one. Look for any announcement about them being down, thank you for your patience, etc. etc. It's always made me scratch my head when these companies to this. How the heck are you supposed to read it if you can't log on? If there is nothing send an email through their customer care or support page. Describe your problem and explain your situation. It might be as simple as resetting your account at their end.
While you are at the library, go to the homepage of another provider. Any one that services your area. Most if not all offer a free trial period - 30 days usually. Sign up. Or if it's easier, do it by phone from home. Log on with them once you are set up and see if your problem has cleared up. If it has then the difficulty is most likely with your provider. If you are still having trouble you'll have to go to plan "B".
Not being American, I can't offer any recommendations for a new service. Keep us posted.
Thanks all for the well-wishes on the website !
I'm keeping my fingers crossed !
I like hot dogs & beans, but don't want to have to eat them everyday !!

Hi Nikki sorry to hear your having such trouble. Â Ok what is the error message that pops up? Â There could be a number of reasons this is happening to you. Â Sherrand had a great suggestion next time your at the library go to their home page. Â Make a note of the error message click on help and look it up. Â There is a list of error messages there and you can click on them and it will tell you what the problem may be. Â It could be you need to upgrade to the latest version of their software it could be noise in your phone line causing it to disconnect or many other things. Â Without knowing what the error message says it's very hard to say. Â
In the meantime Sherrand had another great suggestion sign up for one of the other services that has the 30 day free trial and see if you can get on the internet from there. Â At least this way you will have access until you find out what wrong with the other one or figure out which ISP you may want to switch to.
As far as which providers are good I'm not much help there I've had the same one for a few years now and don't know too much about how the others are. You wouldn't want what I have. I have high speed satilite and it's exspensive. Â But I had no choice I needed high speed and a static IP(which also cost more each month) in order to do my work from home. Â But I agree with the others if you are able to get high speed through the cable or phone co it would most likely be worth it to you. Â I'm not sure how it is but they just started advertising verizon DSL in my area and I think they said it was 14.95 a month.
nikki
if you tell us what area of the country you live in, we could check on IPS on your area
for now, next time at library, go to juno and get additional access numbers,
if dial up is your only choice, you could call netzero and ask for a free CD, they have limited free internet access, like 10 hours a month, its not much, but better than half hour at the library
also walmart has free CDs of people pc
another option is checking yor local yellow book, most areas have local internet providers, every single local provider offers free tech support, and you don't need to install extra software to access the internet, just create a user ID and password over the phone, they guide you to create a dial up conection and you are in
post if you need more help

Eclectica, have a great vacation!
I want 1 2...congrats!!!!!
Nikki, I live in a rural area and I use DSL. It's faster than dial-up but slower than cable. The upside is that when we lose cable, it takes a looooong time for them to fix it. The phone co. is faster at getting service back.

I had charter internet cable for about 6 months and while I never totally lost my service more than one day - I ran into bottlenecks constantly. It was a pain.Â
I have Qwest DSL now and it tests faster than my cable did...
I once went from DSL to dialup for almost a year and it killed me... I hated every moment of it.
I want 1 2...congrats on your website sales!!! I wish you many, many more.Â
I have dial-up as it's my only choice. The worst part of it at this moment is that I also now have static on my phone line and it's taking me longer than normal to do my website work. Very maddening. Instead of going my fastest at 45.6 kbps (yeh, I know, thats a big joke) but the fastest that I can get is 40. I can only imagine the amount of work I could do with hi speed! Heck, even lite speed I would take.Â
