Quote:I am rather amused when I see people post things like "finally, there's an alternative to eBay", "the fees are so low" because I think to myself, umm, during the years when Yahoo was charging 5 cent insertion fees (regardless of price) no one on any forum wanted to try them (a fact which I rather enjoyed because it meant I could take over a category on Yahoo and have all its buyers to myself [/quote/
Bolding mine.
Amazing. I know. And I still don't understand why.
Quote:That somebody could succeed, to offer a viable, interesting alternative for a community venue like ebay
Somebody did succeed in offering a viable community venue except it's a classifieds site not an auction site. It started in San Francisco around the same time as eBay and it's now the 27th most visited web site in the world. Millions of listings, millions of monthly users, thriving discussion forums with millions of postings, and in a lot of ways it actually reminds me a lot of how eBay was in 1996 ...it's called Craigslist.
Quote:I would have thought that more folks would have signed up, actually, to try to give it a big push
Why? There are 1000 other auction sites out there, 100 others using the same software as WP, and WP is no different than 99% of them-no financing, no new features that haven't been done dozens of times before, etc. There really is no reason for anyone to give WP a push over the other small auction sites that already exist.
If sellers wanted to give something a push in hopes of actually being able to create a viable alternative auction venue, it would probably make more sense for them to give that push to a site that already has a huge head start and the finances/infrastructure to support a large scale move of users and listings onto its venue rather than attempting to start from scratch by trying to give a push to a site like WP that has neither the necessary money nor infrastructure to accommodate a large scale move of listings onto its site...which brings us back to the sites like Yahoo Auctions, Amazon Auctions, that have been ignored for years while sellers instead wasted their time focusing on sites like Gegy, Wagglepop, and the thousands of others like them that have come and gone over the years.
Quote:Independent store is a gooooood way to go. Converting customers you already have a relationship with between now and the annual buying season will certainly help set a store owner on the road to success much quicker.
Yep, focusing your efforts on developing your own web site store is the best alternative to eBay.
Heh. :-)
Set up the shipping module in my zen cart and imported 732 widgets last night.Â
(Still need to edit each one, but they're there.)Â Still need to do site docs, but that's on the agenda for today.

732! Wow. Good job. What are site docs??? Kim
Stuff like a privacy policy, contact us, terms and conditions.
Beth has her own "language," at times. If there isn't an abbreviation for something... she makes one up.Â
LOL! I can't take credit for site docs. It was around long before I even thought about the concept!

That is why I said "at times." lol I'm just razzing ya.
PS
I think I am gonig to e-mail eBay and ask why my WP post was pulled and not the current one. I have NOTHING against the OP and I don't give a rat's butt that their post is still around, I just want to see what smoke eBay will blow at me.
Will they even send you a canned answer to that one?Â
