I don't really think it matters, cranky...
After all, a lot of footer text is redundant from links found elsewhere on the page.
BUT... I don't think it would HURT, either!
Logical links structure for your visitors should be the rule of thumb... unless we're talking about tattoos on one's feet? 8)

I'd avoid going overboard on footer text like http://auctionfire.com/ because it will make your store look like shit,

It looks like crap but they are ranked #3 on Google for 'auctions'

I personally don't think footer text matters. Search engines look at the keywords/content on a page but it doesn't matter where that content is on the page.
