Long Sutton St Mary's Churchyard is brightened up by flowers planted voluntarily by Coun Dennis Tennant for the delight of parishioners and flower festival visitors.

But this year the councillor has an ongoing battle against a grey squirrel which seems to be digging up the crocus bulbs.

The troublesome rodent rips up 30 to 40 bulbs and eats its fill...

"You can get within three to four feet of the squirrel and it will sit there. It is laughing at me...

Wait long enough and you'll see - squirrels are everywhere this spring.

But are the foraging rodents really a pest, or are they getting a bum rap?

At Gavilan Hills Memorial Park on First Street, fresh patches of soil lay scattered around grave stones, a sign of the tug-of-war with the burrowing brand of the creatures...

Quote:Southampton University students are being warned that a rising number of ‘mad’ squirrels could affect their safety travelling along Lovers Lane from Highfield Campus to the Avenue. One student, who wished to remain anonymous, was recently forced to miss an entire week’s worth of nine o’clock lectures due to a squirrel attack.

The terrified first year agreed to talk to the Wessex Scene about his ordeal. "It was horrible, I was on my way to hand in my coursework and this thing jumped off a tree branch and onto my head, now I find myself scared to return to lectures...

A family of raucous squirrels stormed an elderly couple's home in Germany, triggering an elaborate 90-minute fire brigade operation during which one of the furry red rodents ran up a fireman's leg and perched on his head.

BBH you ought to see the squirrel we have in our backyard. Don't know if he is on crack, but he was looking a little glassy eyed the other day. We can't get him to leave, might have to pack his bags and send him to London.  >Big Grin
