My external hard drive crashed. It contains a ton of relatively important files on it, and I really, really need to recover them!

Can someone please tell me what my options are? If I have any friggin' options. : :

And please don't forget that I am tech-challenged!

Thanks, chiquita!! It might help. I would like to find a solution that I can handle myself (yeah, hahaha!), if at all possible. 

I think that data recovery is pretty expensive if you have someone else do it?

I checked it. I think it has to do with the config file, but I am so thoroughly confused, I would have to be a fool to try to edit it.
