At Amazon.com, tags were introduced in 2005 as a way for shoppers to find products as well as remember and retrieve items they found earlier while browsing.

"We are pleased with the feedback from customers," said Amazon spokesperson Andrew Herdener, who would not disclose specific sales figures related to tags. The customers "are discovering the feature and using it more to refer to products and buy them."...

I hadn't noticed the tags until I read this article. Amazon has too much clutter on their pages.
