Quote:Gift cards are expected to be the most widely-given gift this year, with 69 percent of consumers planning to buy them according to one survey. The annual value of gift cards in the U.S. is estimated to reach $100 billion next year, and about 27 percent of people who get a gift card still have not redeemed it one year later. That came to $8 billion in unredeemed money in 2006.

Gift cards are a big, inefficient business. A new startup called Leverage wants to help you manage all of those gift cards with a service it is launching next week (probably on Thursday). On Leverage, you will be able to register all of your gift cards and keep track of how much you have left or stored on each one. You will also be able to buy gift cards, or swap them with others (like Swapagift). The site will also let you manage all of your loyalty reward programs, such as frequent-flyer or frequent-stay plans. To get people to register cards on the site, it will pay “interest” on the value stored on the cards (3.2 percent for cards bought through the site, and about 1 percent for cards bought elsewhere)...

Quote:YouSwop is a new community for bartering stuff you have lying around the house. The site is currently in private beta, and I got a chance to check it out.

With this site, you must use the YouSwop currency in order to participate in the site. Get 5 credits when you sign up, and more when you invite friends. From there, you can list an item to sell, include a photo, and indicate whether or not there are shipping costs involved. If you’re looking for something to buy, you can search by tag word or browse through categories, filter by price, date, the item’s condition and other factors. YouSwop is looking to build an open community for bartering, so things like charging for shipping costs are discouraged...

Reviews of 8 more swap sites:

Quote: Online trading site Swaptree entered public beta this month after over a year in testing - it lets you swap books, music, DVDs and video games. In fact, online trading is a growing trend, with some new sites adding social networking to the mix. Today we look at 8 of the most interesting sites where you can trade the stuff you’ve got for the stuff you want....

SwitchPlanet - Going Green is the mantra of 2007 and Switch Planet plans to adhere to it. The site is still in beta and believes in the motto of “use more… waste less”. Lofty ambitions? Maybe, but for now it does look promising. It is based on the same principle as the above-mentioned services which means; sign up, list your items, make a preferences list and start swapping. SwitchPlanet is 100% free but you can buy additional points, which lets you skip the waiting period....
