Firefox Contest Calls on Independent Filmmakers

Mozilla is doing something that no open-source Web browsing project has ever done before -- using independent filmmakers to spread the word about its next release.

Call it open-source marketing. Mozilla is reportedly preparing to tap into the large community of amateur filmmakers to produce 30-second video advertisements to promote Firefox 1.5, the latest edition of its popular Web browser...

...The winner will also take home a high-end computer system. The browser maker has told a British media outlet that a panel of film industry judges will select the winner.

Hey Backstage readers! It’s finally live over at the Firefox Flicks front pages.

We’re launching with three videos and plan on adding another two or three each day or every other day. Rather than just pushing one new video at a time, we’ve decided that it fits a lot better with the kinds of submissions we’re receiving to offer several videos that each represent a different approach, or are targeted at a different audience (we may also do some “themed groups” later on.) ...

The three videos we’re launching with are “Double-Click Relief” by Craig Kuehne, “Drama Queen” by John X Carey, and “Daredevil” by Pete Macomber...

Mozilla today announced the winners of its Firefox Flicks video contest at the San Francisco International Film Festival. The winning videos were selected from nearly 300 submissions created by Firefox enthusiasts from around the world, who responded to the opportunity to help promote Firefox through short film.

The grand prize winner, "Daredevil," will be short-listed for the NY Festival of Advertising's 2006 International Advertising Awards in May, and the finalists' Firefox videos will be incorporated into Mozilla's 2006 marketing activities...

"Daredevil" was directed by Pete Macomber, who creates music videos, commercials and screenplays from his Venice, Ca. home when he is not out chasing waves. With "Daredevil," Macomber captures, in documentary-style, the youthful energy and approach to life of a girl whose "other browser is a surfboard."...

hmm...  My son (he's 4) likes the one with the idiot browsers acting stupid, and the Firefox tells them to shut up... then blows up IE when it says 'wheee' again

needless to say we've watched that damn thing like 400 times now, he turns blue from laughing.
