Google to launch PCs

Christmas is near and you can expect a cool gift from Santa (Google) this time. Google is planning to launch PCs for markets in India and China...

The PCs won’t have CPU; they will be bundled with Keyboard, Mouse and Monitor. The PC will connect to the hosted system on their server and the remote OS will manage storage and functioning of the PC. This will keep PC away from virus and also provide secure solution for storage of the user data.

The PC will run on software created by Google; hardware and other technicalities will be managed by Wyse technology

Google is planning to provide an own-brand Windows-less PC and sell the low-cost system through a partnership with retail giant Wal-Mart. The machine and/or the sales deal could be announced as early as this coming Friday.

So claims the Los Angeles Times, citing unnamed sources. Whether they've seen the text of Google co-founder Larry Page's Consumer Electronics Show keynote, which he'll make in Las Vegas on Friday, isn't clear, but it's suggested that the talk will cover the new box.

As the paper notes, analysts from investment house Bear Stearns last month claimed Google was preparing a box capable of shuffling digital Internet-sourced media content around the home across local wireless or wired networks.

Google may be close to rolling out a bargain-priced device for accessing and managing Web content, according to published reports that say the search giant may use this week's Consumer Electronics Show to unveil the initiative.

Speculation ranged from a low-cost PC-like device that would run on a Google-created operating system -- which would be a direct competitive thrust toward Microsoft, which still controls the vast majority of the PC operating system market -- to a much less functional device that would only connect to the Internet and download content for playback...

In fact, some say the real motivation for such a move by Google would be to create a new opportunity for selling Web advertising...

I'll guess and say the American model will incorporate the same functionality as the product slated for the Chinese and Indian markets. 

I don't think a less powerful computer will knock Microsoft off its throne or challenge other OS's.  Google gaining additional ad space is the reason for its introduction.

Google has quashed a rumor that it plans to enter the ultra low-margin PC business. The denial will surprise few given the speculative nature of the original LA Times piece that made the Google PC claim...

Reporters calling Google's public relations staff about the rumor were told it is "wholly inaccurate." Similarly, Wal-Mart's rather busy PR team classified the Times speculation as "a rumor without any truth to it at all."...
