Stranded, NYC Heads to the Web, Craigslist During Transit Strike

As millions of New Yorkers contend with a crippling transit strike, the web is taking center stage as a place to cope, from blowing off steam to lining up rides to and from the city.

Since members of Local 100 of The Transport Workers Union walked away from their buses and subway trains early Tuesday morning, craigslist new york city has become a virtual hub for stranded commuters. Hundreds of help postings have cropped up on the site by people offering and looking for rides. Others are renting space in their apartments as strike crash pads.

I'm not enjoying freezing my ass off  walking over the Williamsburg Bridge twice a day to get from Brooklyn to Manhattan. Blue lips aren't the fashion statement I want to make.

New Year's Eve Tube strike on

Hopes of averting a damaging New Year’s Eve Tube strike remain slim today.

London Underground (LU) says it is prepared to meet the RMT rail union at Acas, the arbitration service today. But the RMT, which has called a December 31 strike of its Tube station staff, says it sees no point in attending after LU rejected a compromise move in the dispute over the implications of a new 35-hour week.

Station staff are due to walk out from noon on New Year’s Eve to noon on New Year’s Day in an action which will lead to a complete shutdown on the network.

A day after a nationwide strike, bus, train and metro employees remained away for another 24 hours, bringing Athens traffic to a near halt.
