The NY Post is reporting that Google is in talks to acquire or form an alliance with Napster.

Internet giant Google is considering an extensive alliance with Napster, which could include an outright acquisition, as it plots its move into the digital music world, The Post has learned.

According to sources within the music industry, Google has been pushing to align with Napster — rather than build its own online music store

Napster sources reportedly refused to comment on the rumours overnight in the United States, stating that the company is in a quiet period ahead of releasing results.

However, Google told Times Online today: "No, we have no plans at this time to develop a music store, or to compete with existing online and offline music retailers."

The company said it had "nothing to announce" regarding Napster.
