Google starting to add Base results to their main web search

Philipp Lenssen sees this as another step toward Google Base directly competing with eBay:

Instead of the searcher seeing eBay AdWords for particular products, Google cuts the middle-man here. And this is the point when it becomes even more interesting for people to push their products into Google Base... because all of a sudden your products might be seen by non-developers. Sure, Google Base isn't eBay yet, but it's getting a few steps closer...

It is getting closer to eBay Motors, certainly. A search for Honda Odyssey, the popular minivan, brings up a similar set of search boxes allowing the user to look for an automobile by location, make, and model.

Over the past 24 hours American & English users of Google have been reporting sightings of a Google Base search box which appears above the main web results when performing specific Google searches.

One example is the search on Google for “homes for sale” in which a lot of Google users are being served the Google Base “Refine your search for homes for sale” box. The move is a mix of local and niche search by Google, which is hosting the search result content in the reality feeds indexed and updated using the Google Base system.

The rumored Automat feature is supposed to put individual products with buy buttons in search results but it won't be free.  It'll be tied in with AdWords...provided the rumors are true that is...
