Instead, Mr. Navar, who had founded and built the online auction house’s search technology, chose to go to Stanford University’s 10-month Sloan Master’s program. Towards the end of the program, Mr. Navar, then 35, came up with the idea for LiveDeal.com, an online classifieds service.

On its face, the site looks a lot like Craigslist.org, where people reach out to a community with everything from job listings to personal ads. But Mr. Navar doesn’t want to be the online classifieds site that the print media loves to hate. He wants to be the partner that helps them survive, even thrive. LiveDeal is already powering the Toronto Star, and is in talks with other media companies as well...
