Isn't reading someone's personal emails without previous knowledge or consent tantamount to wiretapping, tampering with the mail, recording conversations without consent or authorization?

Would be nice, but my guess is its not the same. I think since you're playing in Ray's "sandbox", you're playing by his rules. I could be wrong, but eBay monitors those too, they do have the lawyers to advise them on the legality. Doubt they'd do it if it was going to get them sued.

I'd like someone with legal background to give an opinion on this. In my mind, it's one thing to be an employee of a company and have your emails and web site visits monitored, and another to have your PMs read and arbitrarily censored between independent business associates, without clear reason-- such as bodily harm threats or correspondence related to drug trafficing, child pornography, terrorist activity, etc.

Very good point. Especially considering, like eBay, they tout themselves as "just a venue". Any lawyers in da house?

Another point to consider is what if you are referring to a buyer. A buyer can PM any member of WP. A buyer is not conducting business, and would not be considered to be conducting business with WP. Imagine any business monitoring its consumer base in this way.

Chiquita, an excellent observation. And its been done! I can't remember if I read it here (I don't think so) or received an email saying that WP contacted their buyer when there was a problem reported by PM from this buyer. WP answered the buyer before the seller could and that seller was not happy about the interference. Pain10

Whether the PM is from a business associate, buyer (potential business associate), a friend, a relative, or whoever, is not the issue. It is a message forwarding system. When there is no cause to suspect the system is being used to help conduct criminal activity, I see no reason whatsoever any "venue" or message forwarding system has the right to do this. It would be like Adelphia reading all my email and arbitrarily making a decision as to which emails of my friends, family, business associates and relatives it thinks are worthy of passing on to my in box and which it thinks should be deleted. All without consent or authorization from me. If there's a lawyer in the house, please step up.

Edit: Ah, oh. The more I think about this, the more I'm starting to itch. I think my dander's getting up.
