Re: Wagglepop 2: Deja Vu as Auction Site That Left Sellers Stranded Reopens
Jan 26, 2005 From OTWA about WP1

Quote:I'm not exactly sure what all the fuss is about wagglepop - a site that's not even up..LOL.

Some of Ray's statements don't seem to make sense, at least based on my own experience. For example, people are asking about whether WP will combine mutiple auctions on an invoice. His answer is basically that WP wants to "keep out of the seller's way" and allow us to handle things as we see fit. His philopsopy is that "automation kills online sales".

This just doesn't seem right to me. Automation is the essense of online sales - I've found that you have to do more than merely put a buyer and seller together. You need to make the transaction as smooth and foolproof as possible. The process has to instill confidence or the customer walks away (sometimes after the purchase too). eBay's combined invoices and shipping, for example, has resulted in much much quicker payments - and I haven't had someone short me on shipping in months.

He was also asked about a bulk lister. His response was that the early sellers would have to put in some work. Then something about listing 10 items a day for 30 days and having them auto-relist for 30 days...blah blah. Which misses the point entirely. Volume sellers - particularly those that specialize - have already spent hours setting up auctions and are ready to upload them. Lack of a bulk lister will mean lack of listing volume, and avoidance by a lot of powersellers (including myself). Why in the world would I invest hours of my time to manually cut/paste 600 aucition items to a site with no buyers???

There's a bit of arrogance to the guy that just hits me the wrong way. His premise is that "he's a seller, he's talked to sellers", but he's awfully quick to poo-poo ideas and suggestions from experienced sellers.

And the last thing that really irked me after reading over his forums - his reliance on SEO for site promotion. If that's how he thinks he's going to get business, he hasn't actually done the research he's claimed. I currently sell the same items on eBay, eBay Stores, Ioffer, and my own website. My items show up countless times, under many keywords, and across all venues. The best SEO - by far - is occurring thru Ioffer. Someone there really knows SEO, cause their links usually beat out everyone else's - both in placement and quantity. But interestingly enough, my Ioffer items see relatively little traffic. But even worse, the conversion of hits to sales on Ioffer is poor. My website, with a lot less SEO, has excellent conversion and outsells Ioffer about 10 to 1.

So I guess my point is...what does Waggle offer in addition to this? It won't have the features, functionality, or traffic of eBay OR my own website (come on...Ray thinks that a "shopping cart" of multiple items will "complicate" his system), nor will it have the ease of use of Ioffer (Grabber is why I started using Ioffer) or eBay (which my auction management program and lister supports).

Is the point of WP just so seller's ticked off by eBay have yet another place to waste time and effort?

And why oh why are so many people over there slathering over this guy like he's the auction messiah? I actually haven't seen him say anything that would lead me to believe he was ever a professional online seller, or that he has any ideas to bring in buyers.

What I DO see is a salesman and promoter with a little bit of technical knowledge and just enough online sales experience to sound convincing. But it really just sounds like every other eBay-wannabe site owner - "ebay started with just an idea and a single pc - it's the new frontier - we can compete with your help".

I don't know why anyone falls for it.

Re: Wagglepop 2: Deja Vu as Auction Site That Left Sellers Stranded Reopens
NOW I understand Deja Vu in the title. Another assessment from OTWA

Quote:For someone who claims WagglePop is "for the people" (the whole--we can do it with community input thing), Ray is VERY unwilling to listen to suggestions. He does not take suggestions--even though he ASKS for suggestions. Yet, he claims WagglePop is being built with the input of sellers.

He posts questions, issues, policies, and functions and asks for opinions and input, then systematically shoots down or ignores each suggestion that is contrary to what he has already decided.

Re: Wagglepop 2: Deja Vu as Auction Site That Left Sellers Stranded Reopens
Jan 27, 2005 on OTWA - where is TR. I'd like to plant a big slobbery kiss on his cheek!

Quote:I know you are excited about Wagglepop. I know you LOVE the idea of a new site coming along and the power you feel that you are finally taking some control of your business and getting past the frustrations eBay has dealt you... the anger that eBay has made you feel... It's not JUST about the fees, is it? It's about a lot more than JUST the fees. It's about eBay spending all of it's energy doing things to make eBay more money, and NONE of that energy to make YOU more money. Nobody is trying to put money in YOUR pocket, and that is exactly what eBay SHOULD be doing... but they don't. You know it, and it makes you angry, and it should, because it could be so very different than it is...

But this Wagglepop. That's not going to do it either. It's going to feel good for a while, and then it's not going to feel so good. You will fight for it, protect it, try to nurture it to life, but in the end, IT WILL DIE. It will because every other site just like it has died. It will because it is not a formula for success. Not for you, not for Ray. Your hopes, your dreams of what you want it to be will be dashed against the rocks, run straight into the wall, thrown off a cliff... because this is NOT a forumla for success folks. It's just not.

You can build something for yourself on the web, but it's not going to happen at an auction site. If you want success for yourself on the internet, if you want an internet based business, then you need to face up to facts, look reality in the face, put down the happy cake and get serious about your business. That day when you could be naive and pop a few things on eBay and make a bunch of money are OVER. They aren't going to revive at some other place. You think your sales on eBay suck, just wait until you've spent a couple of months at Wagglepop. Oh, you can still chat with your friends and have fun at the community site known as Wagglepop, where buyers and sellers are all the same handful of people... and there is nothing wrong at all with doing that... but if you are serious about building a business online, you are wasting your time with this.

Flame away, I know you do not want to hear it, but it is absolutely the truth.... and you need to hear it.
The one thing you can never afford to lose is your temper.

Re: Wagglepop 2: Deja Vu as Auction Site That Left Sellers Stranded Reopens
Jan 27, 2005 on OTWA about WP1

Quote:That was a time of discovery... because, before that, most of us did not know what possibilities were out there for our businesses... and we went to find out. Now, 4.5 years later, we know. We know what will not work. We are learning what will work.

Wagglepop will not work. It just won't. I'm not guessing into the future, I know because I have been there and done that and so have many of you. These folks are coming into it fresh and excited, but they are unwilling to even consider the possiblity that all this has been done before, and it's been done bigger and better, by staffs of people who had vast experience in the industry, and excited newcomers like Ray, and all kinds of different people with the same hopes and dreams and enthusiasm. This is just a replay of what we've been doing for the past 5 fricken years! They don't want to hear that, and they don't. They don't even read it...

But some do. A few do. They don't post, but they do read it and it makes them think and that is all I want to accomplish.. Those who don't/won't listen can go right ahead and Waggle away... but some can't afford to cast their lot with a sinking ship, and they need to hear that before they chug another glass of Kool-Aid and jump off that cliff.

And proven a bang on prediction of the future. This time around with WP2...same owner, same ego, ultimately the same result. It's only a matter of time.
The one thing you can never afford to lose is your temper.
