Philip Kaplan, who ran the controversial Web site F***edCompany during the dot-com bust, has stepped aside as CEO of a small, profitless start-up he founded in 2004.

Kaplan, 30, told CNET News.com on Wednesday that he made the decision to turn AdBrite, which sells online advertising, over to "professional management." While he said he wasn't forced out, he acknowledged that his board of directors didn't try to dissuade him from stepping down.

"I suggested it, and there was no push back," Kaplan said with a smile. "I really wanted an expert to come in and help run AdBrite." ...

Who knew a year ago that AdBrite would go from servicing 4,200 sites (which we thought was awesome at the time), to almost 16,000! (which we’ll think is small someday According to ComScore Media Metrix, AdBrite reaches more than 55 million unique users monthly.

Because of this growth, and my strengthened focus on AdBrite's new features such as Video and Banner ads, I've decided to bring in a CEO to help lead AdBrite to our next phase growth. I'm still the Chief Product Officer (and Chairman), continuing to build fun new ways to monetize the Internet for publishers and advertisers.
