A related article in today's NY Times:

Quote:GOOGLE has trained millions of people to head first to the Web to find information. Can it now train consumers to buy?...

Some analysts believe the service could be a boon to online merchants, which have been saddled with the reality that about half of Internet users are still too afraid of credit card fraud and identity theft to buy anything online, according to surveys. Payment alternatives like PayPal and Bill Me Later have helped some merchants entice nervous shoppers to cross the line.

“It hinges on a couple of things, but I think Google can be a significant accelerator for alternative online payments,” said Dan Schatt, an analyst with Celent Communications, a Boston-based financial consulting firm...

It would be nice if Google Checkout would convert some of that group into online shoppers, but if they don't trust Amazon.com or Wal-mart.com to safeguard their info, why would they be any more likely to trust checkout.google.com?
"Well, Jay was so giddy that someone named Jay was involved with this site we posted our first non-eBay listing in 3 years here at Lunarbid (we tried two items at Yahoo once upon a time, they bombed)" -Marie posting in a LunarBid thread at OTWA in 2005 wins the award for 'most moronic reason ever given for choosing a venue"

"thanks twat u must have nothing better 2 do. do u talk to all your members like that. will not be recomending your site.
best way to put it is TULIPTOOLS.COM IS REALLY SHIT. DONT JOIN." -pubescent owner of rinky dink off2auction.com in 2011

Google Checkout gets rave reviews from e-commerce vendors and industry watchers
A related article:

Quote:Google Checkout is getting rave reviews from e-commerce vendors and industry watchers who advise merchants to get in the express lane and sign up now.

There's nothing more forlorn to the online seller than the thought of orphaned shopping carts, abandoned at the critical point-of-sale, filled with items and left in the ether with no explanation. Google Checkout makes online shopping easy by providing a single log-in to buy across the Web and by identifying secure places to shop within search result ads. This identification comes in the form of a Google Checkout badge, appearing on all sites using the service, designed so shoppers can quickly find and recognize those Google Checkout sites...

"First and foremost," says Clay Olivier, Volusion COO, "Google Checkout results in more sales because people trust Google, and that trust will be shared with sites using it, you're getting that brand extension. And if you're looking at two sites, and one has a Google badge, that's one more reason to choose it over the other."...
