Low Cost College Textbook Venues gain following among Collegians

Student activists have long lamented the price of books in petitions and news conferences that largely were ignored. That's changing.

Congress decided to study the issue this summer. Lawmakers in several states have considered state sales tax exemptions and other options.

And then there are cheaper online alternatives:

A small Minnesota press will offer free textbooks that contain advertising. Students can download a version of the books to store on their computer hard drives.

TextbookX.com has launched a new program at 19 schools, including Indiana University, that offers students a way to search for books by their class or professor's name and find the cheapest prices...

My son paid $540 for books this semester.    He was a new student so he couldn't register in time to buy them online.  (All but one text and two workboks were used, too - the new price would have been about $800!)

He'll be able to register in November for the spring, so we are selling his books online and buying as many as we can find online before school starts in January.

I went to school for a LONG time.  Even grad school.  I NEVER paid that much for books - it is out of control!
