Quote:These third party Safe Seal sites are a JOKE.
I mean who is CERTIFYING THE CERTIFIERS ANYWAY?

There is no resolution or REAL enforcement after a problem occurs.

BBB or ST or ANY of them have NO authority to do jack wombat poo poo.
So what's the point of paying any of these clowns?

It's all just eye candy to make your customers feel better.
So it seems and is ALL they are selling.

A FALSE sense of "security".

HackerSafe seals and Thawte SSL's do represent actual security.  Legitimate HackerSafe sites undergo rigorous daily security vulnerability scans.  Thawte SSL certificates provide secure connections for the transmission of customers' personal data.

HackerSafe seals retail for $1799 per website per year, and as a paying HackerSafe customer it pisses me off to see someone who isn't a HackerSafe customer illegally using the logo in order to lie to their customers. I've seen many such sites with fake seals and if a buyer gets burned by someone in Eastern Europe or Podunk who has a fake seal they lose faith in the seal which hurts all merchants

Here are my thoughts on the use of seals.

1.) I agree that seals are WAAAY overpriced, and most really don't mean anything--truly.

2.) Even though they're expensive and they have no real value, some customers do seem to feel safer with sites that have them. Whether the sites really are safer is a bigger issue.

3.) I would love to use the BBB program, but it seems so rotten of them to charge $200 for "trust."

4.) I will probably "buy" some for my site eventually, just to comfort the few people who do look for them. Whatever works to make sales, even if it's kind of crooked from the get-go.

5.)
Quote:My real point was that these sites that sell YOU seals are just doing it for the money.
I guess if a SEAL is what you need to sell, well then a SEAL you must have.
100% agreed. They really are just doing it for the money--yet at the same time, it seems beneficial to have them.  :-\

6.) Hackersafe/Scanalert really does do active checks and scans of your site. It's one of the only seals that really do something.

Quote:If the secure part of your site has the same Top Level Domain but a different host (i.e. www.domain.com is a registered domain but secure.domain.com is the secure part of the site) you may display our Second Tier Trusted Seal.  If the secure part of your site has a different top-level domain, you are not allowed to display a site seal.
Quote:Fraudulent Use

Look out for the following to identify abuse of the thawte Trusted Site Seal:

    * The site does not use a digital certificate
    * The information on the Seal Information Page does not match the information of the site
    * When the thawte Trusted Site Seal is clicked, there is no information page that pops-up
    * There have been modifications to the thawte Trusted Site Seal

Another abuse scenario: the site uses an untrusted self-signed SSL but displays the logo of a well-known trusted certifier like Thawte or GeoTrust (Equifax).  Visiting a site's URL via https and clicking on your browser's lock logo will verify whether the logo you see on a site is real or not.
