This policy MAY be against FTC guidelines for online auctions, for the simple fact is there will be no way to find shills on items over $200.

One more reason NOT to buy on ebay...

eBay made a major concession to scammers last week when it announced its new "Safeguarding Member IDs" initiative last week. eBay will begin hiding the User IDs of bidders on listings with a high bid of $200 or greater on its U.S. Motors site. Sellers will be able to view all bidders' User IDs, but no other member will.

The Safeguarding Member IDs project is one of the most experience-changing policies on eBay to date. Bidders will not know whom they are bidding against, and they will be unable to look for signs of shill bidding. eBay said it may roll out the policy to eBay.com early next year...

So, it is VERY likely that those bidding on items where this new policy is in place will be dealing with shill bidding.

You know it! 

I've never bid on private auctions for the very same reason, and what this policy will do, is essentially make all auctions over $200 PRIVATE.

Sort of ironic... in TurboLister, and the old SYI page (not sure of the new one), there always was a warning before choosing to make your auction private.  Something like "you should have a very good reason to do this!".  Now it will be automatic!

If you plan on buying an item on ebay worth more than $200, the chances are VERY GOOD that  you will be SHILLED!

I also find it ironic that they will begin implementing it on ebay motors first.  Ebay motors is the SHILLING backyard!

PESA Town Hall with Rob Chestnut eBay Trust and Safety

We are pleased to annnounce our first PESA Town Hall conference call with
Rob Chestnut, Senior Vice President, eBay Global Trust & Safety, this coming
Wednesday Nov. 15th, 2006 at 12 noon Eastern Time. Today eBay released their
new Safeguarding ID program. The eBay community, and PESA in particular, has
been calling for just such a program for some time. Today's launch is the
first stage of a two stage launch. The purpose of the call is to afford PESA
members an opportunity to provide input on the program.

Mr Chestnut will have with him the technical designers of this feature and
several other Trust and Safety executives. He is very interested in;

a) hearing your assessment of the stage one roll out
and
b) hearing your ideas, comments and suggestions for stage two before he
completes that roll out.

The call will be limited to the first 100 PESA members who call in. We may
have time to address other related Trust and Safety topics. We will likely
have time for approximately 15-20 questions. So once you log in to the call,
please make sure to register your questions early with the call operator.
The call will be moderated by Jonathan Garriss, PESA CEO and Tom Mersch PESA
Board Member. This call is limited to PESA members only.

This is just the first of what will soon be regularly scheduled PESA
organizational and PESA/eBay town hall conference calls to come. If you have

The NDA that prevented the directors from telling the rank and file PeSA members what occured during the meeting with eBay.  :

I don't think regularly scheduled PeSA/eBay conference calls will result in good news for smaller sellers.

Okay.  A new piece o' carp appearing today that I'm sure is connected to all this hiding of bidders' names. 

I'm checking my *watch list* in MyEbay, and instantly notice that the bidders' names have been removed from the lineup.  >  Have to click on the bids number to go to the bid history page of the listing to see the bidders' names.  boinktards!
