I never really did know the particulars behind the pizza lunch. I always just assumed it was something those rascally bears started as a satire on brown bag lunches.

You're the closest. The first Pizza Lunch was the very sparsely attended eBay Stores Brown Bag Lunch on October 20, 2004. The majority of people who attended (including Ray) left the BBL to get Pizza.
