rob Wrote:those kinds of messages don't surprise me, but for the seller to revise all her listings afterwards, is just crazy stupid.Very indicative of how easily most folks are intimidated. This person would do well on wagglepoop. [/quote] Ditto to both quotes. I don't care what holiday greeting people use (I usually say happy holidays), but some people really are opposed to the use of 'holidays' and are boycotting the term 'happy holidays'.

Re: eBayer Refuses to Bid on Auction because Seller's Listing said Happy Holidays
I say (and have in my template and greeting cards) "Happy Holidays" in recognition of the fact that there are numerous holidays celebrated in the winter season. I guess I could have a toggle withe appropriate non-generic greetings and let folks choose, but this just seems easier.
Folks I know . . . my Catholic mom gets a Merry Christmas. My Jewish sister gets a Happy Hannukah. My 21 year old son gets Cash. But if I don't know you, I don't know which holiday to pick . . . and if I am going to greet folks with a non-generic holiday greeting, I want to greet them with one appropriate to the holiday THEY celebrate, not the one I celebrate. (Uh, I don't go around telling others Happy Birthday on my birthday, either. I say that on theirs, when I remember. ) |

Isn't it bazaar, totally bazaar, how restrictive this supposedly advanced culture has become? Just about anyone can be sued for saying just about anything. The fact is, regardless what we say, someone is going to be offended!
I changed my store logo on eBay this a.m. to read "Yule Greetings". I celebrate winter solstice. As thentavius mentioned, Yule has been celebrated since pre-Christian times. Is one group right or wrong? No. It's personal. Should we ignore seasonal greetings in regard to business? No. Our business has character, personality and a right to be expressive. The prospective customer who wrote to the seller may have been offended, but did that give them the right to offend another? That seller could have been Muslim and assimilating to American traditions/expectations as best they could. In our zeal to be politically correct, this society has a tendency to disregard the rights and sensibilities of others. If a group of kids want to pray in school, let 'em. If they don't want to say "In God we trust." simply don't say the words, but don't prevent others from saying them. Me: Censorship = Hot Button |

I agree with you 100%, Rho. Unfortunately, that's not the way it is in reality. It's gotten so bad with overinflated sensitivities, that folks are afraid to say anything at all. Very sad.

The fact is, regardless what we say, someone is going to be offended! Totally agreed. If you like saying Merry Christmas, Happy Yule, Happy Holidays, or I don't Celebrate Anything At All, you should be equally respected and should have the right to express your happiness in any way your religious path takes you. It's wrong to tell someone of Jewish faith they shouldn't say Happy Chanukha. It's wrong to expect someone else to wish someone a happy XXXX, your own way. If everyone would just understand that there are MANY paths to follow, everything would be much less troublesome.
