I'm actually wondering if I need one.  So far I haven't, but I'm using some tutorials and guides now so maybe I will eventually. Feel like I need a course in PHP.

The register link and advanced search link still lead to the coming soon page (with a  banner above 'coming soon').  Did you change any settings or edit any files directly?

No and I haven't added any product yet.  I'm still working on the dang layout.  I don't know why these crazy things don't line up. Sad  Does it look bad even tho they don't line up?

It looks nice but the register and advanced search links aren't working anymore.  Try creating a sample product and seeing if you're able to register during checkout...if not then it should be fixed before you go any further because some of the default install files may need to be restored to get those links working again.
