Proposed Blogger Code of Conduct
Quote:Tim O'Reilly wants to bring the sexy civil back, and he’s doing it by launching a voluntary new code of conduct that is bound to kick up a bit of controversy. Commenters to O'Reilly's blog have already called the plan something that "reeks of prohibition and candlelight marches," and an example of "the agents of normalcy and entrenchment subconsciously attempting to organize, dictate, tame and pacify." And all of this over six brief points. Let's take a closer look at what the code involves.
The six principles

First up is the principle that "we take responsibility for our own words and for the comments we allow on our blog." This means that blog owners will do more than require "accountability"; they will enforce civility by deleting posts. Candidates for deletion include any posts that abuse or threaten others, contain knowingly false information or ad hominem attacks, posts that "misrepresent" another person, anything that infringes upon copyright or violates confidentiality or the privacy of others. This wide-ranging list does not go over well with some critics of the plan, who also are uneasy about the fact that the rules can change at any time. "We define and determine what is 'unacceptable content' on a case-by-case basis, and our definitions are not limited to this list," says the code...

The proposed code of conduct:

Quote: 5. We do not allow anonymous comments.

We require commenters to supply a valid email address before they can post, though we allow commenters to identify themselves with an alias, rather than their real name.

6. We ignore the trolls.

We prefer not to respond to nasty comments about us or our blog, as long as they don't veer into abuse or libel. We believe that feeding the trolls only encourages them--"Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty, but the pig likes it." Ignoring public attacks is often the best way to contain them.
