Re: Take my site... PLEASE!
Quote:how much traffic are you talking about? more than 50 concurrent users? 50 lower, much lower :blinkie:. With OSC it's about 20 concurrent users. If you're on a shared server and consistently above 20 the odds are your host will ask you to move to a VPS or dedicated server (or just shut you down). Zen isn't much better but version 1.4 (?) is supposed to greatly reduce the number of database calls needed. One free script that can handle a large number of users is Interchange (when running under mod_perl) but to take advantaage of the script's full capabilities you really need a dedicated server...and unless you're a programmer modifying the cart will cost you much more than X-Cart (or CS-Cart, ClickCartPro, both of which I prefer over X-cart). A few very busy Interchange sites: http://www.backcountry.com/ http://www.campustech.com/ http://www.fragrancenet.com/

Re: Take my site... PLEASE!
I think it'd be time for a new host if that happened. I've noticed there are a few around, and the rates are typically low.

Re: Take my site... PLEASE!
REDUX: http://dewittco.com/storefront/xcart/catalog/index.html Slideshow is gone and replaced with a table of clickable thumbs... I busted a day making the thumbnails - there's a few in there that I'd like to redo, eventually... but I think people can generally figure out what they are. Any ideas, problems, changes, etc., etc. - please chime in... TYIA! BTW - This is the static side of the house... to browse the dynamic side, just click on "advanced search" or "shopping cart" or go here: http://dewittco.com/storefront/xcart/home.php Not that it's any different, aside from being slightly slower. |

Quote:Slideshow is gone and replaced with a table of clickable thumbs... Much better. One complaint that could result in abandoned carts: many people (like me) want to know the shipping charges before they fill out their "Personal details".

One complaint that could result in abandoned carts: many people (like me) want to know the shipping charges before they fill out their "Personal details".
I hear 'ya - however, without some serious modification by me (and risk breaking the cart!), or a third-party mod, I can't give the customer a shipping quote without them entering their personal details first. One mod I've seen that worked with a previous version of x-cart (not our current version, however), has a built-in shipping calculator within the shopping cart, so the customer could view the shipping rate prior to preceeding to checkout. I don't think that there is one available for my version yet, albeit it is a much-requested feature on the x-cart forums. I suppose I could have the x-cart staff do custom work for our site, but their rates are rather pricey. (I had a quote to modify how x-cart handles linkpoint transactions, and it was around $400+.) Regarding the shipping issue - I'm not content with what we have now, so I expect a change of some degree in the not to distant future. Thanks for the comments! Cheers |

Re: Take my site... PLEASE!
Wow! Looks great. Good job!!!
The shipping thing is the same for me too, but I guess buyers are getting used to it. They don't seem to care as much on the web site as they do on eBay. For specialty items like you and I sell it doesn't seem to be a problem--might not be able to find it elsewhere. I put an info page on my site as to what to expect for shipping. Kim |

Re: Take my site... PLEASE!
I'd display your Thawte SSL seal or put a words on your terms page about security.

Kim
Thanks, Kim! I am hoping to add a "pre-checkout" shipping calculator eventually... I'm just not ready to tackle the excessive coding (if I do it), or the excessive cost (for a third party mod). It'll get done someday! Most of what we sell is generally less than a pound, so I don't think that many buyers expect exorbitant shipping fees anyhow, and proceed with checking out. That's on my "to-do" list, for certain! |

It's looking great, Fg!

I hate being surprised with high shipping charges (happened to me once), so now I never go further unless I know what they are. |
