Google to Squidoo "Spammer, Spammer, Spammer!"

A couple of reports across the net suggest that Seth Godin’s Squidoo is being penalized by Google, most likely due to spam on Squidoo pages.

The reports indicate that some Squidoo pages have seen a 75% drop in traffic, and in other cases have either been removed from high ranking positions on Google, or removed all together...

Squidoo has recently responded to the issue, however given Google’s crackdown it would appear that Squidoo’s response may be a case of too little, too late...

Frankly, I think Seth has fallen to the dark side and has become a Sith Lord of SEO, deceptive affiliate links, and page view gaming. I've known Seth for over 10 years and I respect some of the stuff he's done, but frankly Squidoo is so horrible it makes me wonder. Also, the fact that he won't address the problems is just, well, sad. Does he not care or does he not want to stop the SEO/affiliate gravy train?...

Those of you who track Squidoo pretty closely know that we had a lousy week. 30 spammers took advantage of us and blew Squidoo’s name all over the web...

Seth Godin acknowledged yesterday that Google has dropped Squidoo approximately 30 percent in its rankings.

"There's no question that with Google's last shift in their algorithms and ranks we lost traffic," said Godin. "[But] it's very easy to get superstitious about why organizations do one thing or another. Our expectation is that as our lenses get better, and our site gets traffic, our Google rankings will get back to where they were. It's overly optimistic to think it's going to happen in a week though."

He added, "We have been working on this spam issue for months, putting in place the systems that we are going to use and have done so this week. We found that there were several dozen people that were dramatically exploiting the systems within Squidoo that were previously only used for good. People using the site for nefarious ends will come to an end. That's what we're doing without Google's input."...
