Tagging not only lets people organize the vastness of the Internet in a way that makes sense to them. However, different people tag for different reasons. For surfers, tags are a social seismograph creating a wisdom of the crowd. For publishers, it's all about organizing their sites' presentation. For e-commerce, tags make it easier to find what consumers want to buy...

At Amazon.com, tags were introduced in 2005 as a way for shoppers to find products as well as remember and retrieve items they found earlier while browsing.

"We are pleased with the feedback from customers," said Amazon spokesperson Andrew Herdener, who would not disclose specific sales figures related to tags. The customers "are discovering the feature and using it more to refer to products and buy them."...

I hadn't noticed the tags until I read this article. Amazon has too much clutter on their pages.
