Facebook to open Member Profiles to Search Engines, Non Members

Riding a wave of phenomenal growth in its user base, social networking site Facebook has moved to allow some information on users' profiles to be visible to major search engines like Yahoo and Google. The function is voluntary -- members can opt out if they want to keep their info accessible only to fellow Facebookers. However, the move has still raised privacy concerns.

"We're expanding search so that people can see which of their friends are on Facebook more easily," Philip Fung, a Facebook engineer, stated. "The public search listing contains less information than someone could find right after signing up anyway, so we're not exposing any new information, and you have complete control over your public listing...
