For many, social networking sites are becoming Internet users' home page, replacing Yahoo, Microsoft's MSN and Google as their first stop when surfing the Web.

Andrew Lipsman, analyst at research firm ComScore Media Metrix, says there's plenty of room for niche social network sites.

Social networking sites have been created around fishing, poker, golf and bridge clubs, for teens, physicians, ethnic groups and even pets.

"It's grown explosively and the number of people doing it is just massive," he said. "There's opportunity for players with a few hundred thousands members or a few million if they execute a good strategy." ...
