Re: Censorship and the Rules Regarding Nudity on EntreCard Blogs
Supreme Court rulings on obscenity: Roth v US Quote:The standard for judging obscenity, adequate to withstand the charge of constitutional infirmity, is whether, to the average person, applying contemporary community standards, the dominant theme of the material, taken as a whole, appeals to prurient interest Miller v California Quote:whether the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value. http://www.findlaw.com/01topics/06consti...cases.html
That's the problem. They don't care if the entire blog is looking like pro-bloggers'......if it has one nude image on it, it is deleted. The problem is that their policy states "NO Nudity" and "No Porn". But nudity, as we know, is not necessarily porn. So, whichever mod checks out the complaint, will make a decision based on their own beliefs, and there is no oversight in place. This is the blog that they deleted from their system today (among a bunch of others): http://www.billiondollarbaloney.blogspot.com/ Now, I will grant them that Warhol did have 2 images on the site (I never saw them until a mod posted them for me) that could easily be considered pornish. BUT, if you consider the site as a whole, then it should not have been deleted. What about a new mom breastfeeding? Should that be deleted? Not that I would post any of that stuff, but that others should have that right. |

Re: Censorship and the Rules Regarding Nudity on EntreCard Blogs
Oh, and this morning, a post from an EC blog was at the top of EC's home page. Title: "Anal Sex: How to Make Sure Your Partner Enjoys It".
What a ridiculous policy that allows for that (which I could care less about----I can always decline to read it), but does not allow nudity of any sort. : |

My suggestion for a new policy: use the Supreme Court rulings to guide you 1. Decide whether the image is nudity or pornography: A. If it's nudity: STFU and leave the blog writer and their images alone B. If it's pornography... 1. if "the work blog, taken as a whole, has serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value", ask the blog writer to either remove the porn or move the porn to a page that requires users to access the pornographic image through a "I'm 18+ and agree to view sexually explicit material" landing page 2. if the blog's "primary purpose is to cause sexual arousal" or "appeal to the prurient interest"...ban it.
:ditto: Quote:So, whichever mod checks out the complaint, will make a decision based on their own beliefs, and there is no oversight in place. They need to train their mods better. |

I so know. : i told someone yesterday that i had taken my son to see "Titanic" when he was only 11. There were a couple of minor nude scenes in it. I am a really bad mother, or so I was told. However, toy weapons were always forbidden in my house, and video games were restricted to those that didn't involve gratuitous violence, such as the games where you build cities or design something......you know, useful games. TV was also restricted. |
Very good way to do it, IMO. I floated it on EC yesterday. The thumpers came out of the woodwork, and no one else seemed to care about blog censorship.. But, oh, try to censor the forum.......... : Today, Graham Langdon posted this as a response to my threads. He saw that not enough people cared about blog censorship, and moved in. A very different reaction from his reaction to our protests on forum censorship. I will be surprised if Entrecard exists in two more years, but hell, I am frequently wrong. He has a money deal being announced tomorrow. Of course, he's been telling us that for weeks now. I wish he'd sell the thing to someone who knows what the hell they're doing. An idea is all well and good, but if you can't run it properly, be intelligent enough to hire someone to do it for you. I feel sorry for Phirate, who is technically the code guy, but winds up being the babysitter, and even though he is largely responsible for the success of EC thus far, the credit all goes to Graham. (And eventually, maybe, the 1.2mil that it is currently worth) Edit: Entrecard would not exist without Phirate, but he was offered only a very small stake in it by Graham Langdon. Phirate also appears to work 24 hours a day. |
