eBay started waiving FVF fees if payment is made by PayPal (or eBay's escrow), so I would imagine AliPay is still in the lead.

Online auctioneer eBay Inc. believes it is winning back share from rival Alibaba in the fast-growing China market, following its recent elimination of many fees, eBay's China chief said on Thursday...

In the fourth quarter, TaoBao, the Alibaba service that competes directly with eBay, added 3.9 million users compared with an increase of 2.8 million by eBay...

Jay Lee, eBay's vice president for the Asia-Pacific region, said the company would consider returning to Japan given the right conditions, but declined to be more specific.

Lee said eBay was "observing" the situation in Japan closely, but had no plans to re-enter the market, which is dominated by Yahoo Japan Corp.'s online auction business and Rakuten Inc.'s virtual shopping mall.

I would hope that they could win back something when they're giving their crap away. The Chinese won't bend over and cheer as easily as "others" when they start charging again, though.

And they also won't stand for glitches and zero customer service (IMO).

He's right! It does look like eBay is gaining market share! 

Correct me if I'm wrong (which I'm not  :twistedevil: ) but at the beginning of the 4th quarter eBay claimed it had more users than Taobao, sooooooo Taobao obviosly grew at a much faster pace than eBay (if eBay statement's at the beginning of the quarter were true) during the 4th quarter.  Either eBay lied about the number of users they had at the beginning of the quarter or they're lieing about gaining market share because they both can't be true.

Ma's said eBay's history in China is marked by significant mistakes, including using a U.S. business model there instead of a more locally grown version. In addition, he accused eBay of using a generic global technology platform that was ill suited to the Chinese market.

eBay China is reportedly looking for partners in China.

Insiders at eBay Inc's China unit have not denied that a general feeling of malaise permeates the company's China operations, withering under the constant fire of Alibaba's Taobao consumer auctions site.

EBay management apparently recognizes that Alibaba and others have managed to park its China business in a corner of the growing e-commerce sector while its competitors spin donuts on the front lawn. Yahoo's Jerry Yang and his largest shareholders realized the same thing back in mid-2005, and took action. After spending so much time in China recently, Meg Whitman may have come to a similar conclusion. As a result, eBay is rumored to be looking hard at potential deals to gain traction in the China marketplace...

Newly released stats confirm Taobao holds a 2 to 1 lead over second place eBay Eachnet in the battle for China.

Ebay Eachnet loses out to Taobao

... according to a China Internet Network Information Centre (CNNIC) report released yesterday.

CNNIC said in the report that eBay Eachnet, the Chinese arm of the US firm, took almost 30 per cent of the market share in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou, while its local competitor Taobao, partly held by Yahoo!, grabbed two thirds of the pie, based on the number of active registered traders and the frequency of their transactions last year.

Paipai.com, under the largest Chinese instant messaging service provider Tencent.com, had a market share of 2.2 per cent with the strongest growth...

...half of the traders on Taobao registered last year and 64 per cent of sellers and 56 per cent of buyers trading both on Taobao and eBay Eachnet were registered with eBay Eachnet in 2004 before they migrated to Taobao.

Over 60 per cent of survey respondents said they would buy more frequently on Taobao, while almost 40 per cent preferred eBay Eachnet

China online auction site Taobao.com, a unit of Alibaba.com, had a 67.3 pct share of China's customer-to-customer (C2C) market in terms of user numbers by the end of March, the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) said in a report.

Ebay China, the Chinese unit of US online auction service eBay Inc, had the second largest market share with a 29.1 pct, CNNIC said.

Paipai.com held a 2.2 pct share.
