Overstock and Self Representing Artists
Overstock employee discusses possible plans for the Self Representing Artists category.
Quote:We are discussing something tantamount to your idea for implementation next year. Now that we have the SRA category in place, we like the idea of filtering the SRA artists before they even list, (having them ceritify the work they plan on listing is original, their own) and then marketing the benefits more prominently on our site, to maintain the integrity of the category

http://forums.auctions.overstock.com/vie...27f#147927

Requiring that works be certified before being listed would set Overstock apart from certain other large online auction sites.  :twistedevil:
"Well, Jay was so giddy that someone named Jay was involved with this site we posted our first non-eBay listing in 3 years here at Lunarbid (we tried two items at Yahoo once upon a time, they bombed)" -Marie posting in a LunarBid thread at OTWA in 2005 wins the award for 'most moronic reason ever given for choosing a venue"

"thanks twat u must have nothing better 2 do. do u talk to all your members like that. will not be recomending your site.
best way to put it is TULIPTOOLS.COM IS REALLY SHIT. DONT JOIN." -pubescent owner of rinky dink off2auction.com in 2011

Is selling your art on a closeout site a good career move for artists?  :twistedevil:

Nope. Bad move if you really want to go anywhere with your art. Stick to galleries and
your own website.

This auction site was formed a few years ago by members of the self-representing artists group on eBay after eBay destroyed the art categories with category changes. item specifics, etc.

http://www.artbyus.com/

EDIT--the Overstock self-representing artists category has a total of 167 items listed:

I wonder how they're doing. I didn't see any familiar names from the art world, but really just glanced through.
Did notice alot of overpricing though.

Any opinions?

You won't see any artists that you or I would know as *serious* artists.  With the exception of one or two.

One particular artist I like does really great stuff, very colorful, and has been selling on ebay and overstock for quite a while and doing fine.  She has her own website, too.  Altho I haven't checked to see if she's on the O for quite a while, I KNOW she's still getting bids and selling on ebay in her store/gallery.

This particular artist I think is very prolific.  Doesn't matter if she gets top dollar, and she obviously does not have her nose in the air nor her head in the clouds.  I think she's singing all the way to the bank....

Here's one of her rooster paintings that she now has priced high. Diane Whitehead  I LOVE her rooster paintings.  I LOVE her work!  She does well, I think.  Online and offline.
Smile

Hey Stardust,

Thanks for the info!

Looked at the roosters. Colorful, not me, but hey, if she can get that kind of money for them, more power to her.
Acrylic?

I learned to paint from studying contemporary masters ----David Leffel, Sergei Bongart, Lois Griffel,etc.. That combined with my Dad's position in the art world probably greatly  influences how I view a painting.

Of course, it's all subjective. Smile

My fav artist (and I know her, have studied with her) is Lois Griffel.

http://www.loisgriffel.com/

She was the successor to Henry Hensche at the Cape Cod School of Art (Charles Hawthorne), and I LOVE her work.  I think you would like it also, as she is a master colorist!

Nope, not acrylics.  Diane paints with oils.  Her horses and still lifes are great, too.

Very nice on Lois Griffel!  Looks like you and I admire the same basic type of artworks.

Re: Overstock and Self Representing Artists
Gary Ackerman is my favorite living artist. You gotta like color to like his work. He's an impressionist, not big on realism. I have three of his original oil paintings, which I love. He's quite prolific and here are a few of his reproductions.

And some of his originals that he hasn't reproduced:
