eBay to Pull Andale's Access to Critical Checkout Feature

eBay's decision only strengthens my belief that the reason for Andale's downtime was a security breach (i.e. they were  hacked) rather than a simple database failure.  The fact that eBay wouldn't let any listings that were in Andale's system at the time of the "crash" go through the ebay API when the auctions ended says a lot. 

I think Andale is being punished for lax security rather than extreme glitchiness.

Andale CEO Linda Hayes said she feels terrible about the problems that disrupted her customers' eBay businesses in early November and blames the problem on a third-party software vendor. When asked how much revenue eBay might have lost due to the problem, Hayes said she had no idea and no way of knowing....

..."This is a scary thing for all third-party vendors, it's frightening for all developers," she said. "None of us are immune from technical problems."

eBay spokesperson Hani Durzy said the company made the decision in order to protect sellers from future disruption after Andale failed to meet requirements of the Service Level Agreement (SLA) it had signed with eBay.

eBay said Andale did not meet uptime requirements and did not inform eBay of the technical problem that hit them on October 28 within the required 30 minutes. When asked if Andale kept eBay informed of progress throughout the technical crisis, Durzy said, "to some extent."
