Trade Me, New Zealand's EBay, Is So Successful That It's Banned

In a nation of just 4 million people, the closely held Web site got 2 million visitors in November, according to researcher Nielsen/NetRatings. A month earlier, Trade Me overtook Microsoft Corp.'s local portal as New Zealand's most-visited Web site.

Trade Me says it has 1.1 million members. The ability to reach them is luring some advertisers away from newspapers owned by Australian publishers APN News & Media Ltd. and John Fairfax Holdings Ltd.

As Trade Me expands into new businesses, it might pose a threat even to the nation's stock exchange, MediaCom's Carney says.
