Re: GBB is down
Etsy is down this morning, with the 'cannot connect to database'. I wonder if they're using the same host......

It's a strike against using a shared server on a machine that hosts 587 other web sites.
I thought the whole idea was to isolate each shared portion of the server so they would not negatively impact each other. Also, I thought load distribution would play a part too. |
I thought the whole idea was to isolate each shared portion of the server so they would not negatively impact each other. Also, I thought load distribution would play a part too.
Nothing is isolated on a shared server. All 587 sites share the same server resources and so a problem on one site (or very heavy traffic on one site) can negatively impact ALL of the other sites on that server. If you want isolated you either need a dedicated server or a VPS (or whatever GoDaddy is calling it) like you got. Diger Wrote:BBH and Mandy have talked about spiders before. Maybe you need to ban some of them? They are crashing the server? They're not crashing the server. 17 spiders in a small database isn't enough to crash it. Our spider problem was because we have one site with a 4GB database and the spiders were running amuck in it and spawning 1000s of processes per minute. We also have another site that regularly caches about 2-3GB of data in the database and the spiders were running amuck in the cache...one again spawning 1000s of database calls. If you're on a shared server you really can't ban bad spiders because they don't obey robots.txt. The only way to ban them is to block their IPs in the server's firewall...which you can't do on a shared server because you don't have access to the IPTables/Firewall, etc..

Nobody tells me anything. I thought Vital was on Jen's VPS/VDS through cari.net.
