Debate Stirs Over Employee ID Implants

An Ohio security company has become the first known U.S. employer to implant electronic ID tags in employees, the Financial Times reported Monday. Officials with CityWatcher.com in Cincinnati said two people agreed to the experiment for protecting the security of a room used to store security video footage.

Liz McIntyre, who campaigns against the use of identification technology, said it was dangerous new ground for the company. "There are very serious privacy and civil liberty issues of having people permanently numbered," she noted.

When some of us go to work we are given I.D. badges or verification numbers, but for the first time ever you and your I.D. may become one.  In Cincinnati two small silicon chips were implanted into two workers who volunteered to help test the new found technology at a surveillance equipment company.  The chips are known to be as radio frequency identification chips or RFIDs.  The technology for the first time is now surfacing in the U.S., used only by the Mexican attorney general to help deny access to employees into secure areas.
