eBay's Lack of Interest in Fighting Fraud Catching Up to It, PayPal Chargebacks

UK-based Computing Which?, a consumer magazine, exposed Internet auction site eBay for its lack of concern over fraud and is calling on eBay to do something about it.  But Computing Which? Magazine isn't alone...

But in the case of eBay's auction site, its fraud is internal.  Computing Which? says that eBay needs be more proactive in identifying counterfeit items offered for sale. It wants the auction site to warn customers about the dangers of fraud and to crack down on the unlicensed sale of medical products such as contact lenses....

Computing Which? said eBay's online money transfer service PayPal was the safest method for customers to pay for goods because it doesn't involve revealing bank details.  AXcess News thinks Computing Which?'s editor must have been too close to the ink bottle when she permitted that to be printed - as its flat out not true...

In 2005, eBay [PayPal] had the highest charge-back ratio of any online ecommerce company on the Internet - world wide  - and compared to the prior year's figures, it had increased over 150 percent in 2005.

I cannot recall eBay ever suing or filing a single criminal complaint against any - not one - fraudster using their company's name.  The fact is, unless they [phishers] stole directly from eBay - they just don't care.

I'd say that's fairly accurate.  eBay's primary concern has always been to protect itself from any liability and its policies/user agreement are designed to protect eBay first--even if it means its users will be exposed to risk or left to fend for themselves.  As far as eBay is concerned, it is only a venue.  Tiffany, and several politicians now say otherwise, and so the chances of eBay being able to continue to insulate itself from liability are shrinking.

10.00 is required fee imposed by the credit companies through paypal. Paypal does not get this fee. And if the byer has used echeck or balance transfer or checking account through paypal, there is no fee to sellers.

This isn't accurate, is it?  Or did I just make an asp out of myself?

eBay has hit back at claims from consumer magazine Computing Which? that suggest the company should do more to protect its users from fraudsters.

The magazine has said eBay shows too little interest in identifying fraudsters among its user-base and supported that claim with figures from the Metropolitan Police...

However, eBay has hit back saying the statistics quoted from the Met are "misleading"...

The company claims the vast majority of those cases take place off eBay, with customers being encouraged 'offline' to conduct private sales with individuals intent on defrauding them...
