Allegations Yahoo Collaborated With Chinese Government to Jail Journalist

Reporters Without Borders issued a statement alleging that Yahoo supplied the Chinese government with information that helped jail a Chinese business journalist.  The China operations of Yahoo, Microsoft, google and other foreign technology and Internet companies have come under frequent criticism due to their willingness to censor content and overlook other rights abuses in an effort to gain favor with the Chinese government in hopes of gaining a share of the Chinese market..

“Information supplied by Yahoo ! led to the conviction of a good journalist who has paid dearly for trying to get the news out. It is one thing to turn a blind eye to the Chinese government’s abuses and it is quite another thing to collaborate.”...

A new development in this case:

Internet firm Yahoo may face legal action for allegedly providing information which allowed a Chinese journalist to be jailed for 10 years for leaking state secrets, his family said.

Zhang Yu, representing the family of Shi Tao, said they were considering taking Yahoo Hong Kong Holdings to court either here or in the United States.

'We believe what (Yahoo) did was illegal so we are considering taking Yahoo to court,' Zhang told reporters, adding that Yahoo had refused to discuss the matter with him...

Yahoo ! implicated in third cyberdissident trial
US company’s collaboration with Chinese courts highlighted in Jiang Lijun case

Reporters Without Borders has obtained a copy of the verdict in the case of Jiang Lijun, sentenced to four years in prison in November 2003 for his online pro-democracy articles, showing that Yahoo ! helped Chinese police to identify him.

It is the third such case, following those of Shi Tao and Li Zhi, proving the implication of the American Internet company...

Still no reaction from Yahoo! after fourth case of collaboration with chinese police uncovered

Reporters Without Borders called on Yahoo! to withdraw its Internet servers from China as a fourth case was revealed of the company’s collaboration with Chinese police that led to the jailing of a cyberdissident.

Human Rights in China (HRIC) has said that the verdict in the case of Wang Xiaoning, 55, sentenced to ten years in prison in September 2003 for posting “subversive” articles online, referred to collaboration by the US Internet company.

"Chinese journalists and dissidents used to trust Yahoo! more than local companies, to protect the confidentiality of their electronic communications,” Reporters Without Borders said.

“This company has betrayed them by shamefully collaborating with the police. It has said today that it is ‘upset’ by the situation, but the time for lamentation is past. We expect Yahoo! executives, particularly Jerry Yang, to announce that they will withdraw their email servers from China.”

Update:  The UK/Ireland Journalists' union is calling on its 40,000 members to boycott all Yahoo services as a result of Yahoo's alleged collaboration with human rights abusers in China.

The union representing journalists in Ireland and the UK called on its 40,000 members to boycott all Yahoo! products and services to protest the internet company's reported actions in China.

The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) said it sent a letter on Friday to Dominique Vidal, Yahoo! Europe's vice president, denouncing the company for allegedly providing information to Chinese authorities about journalists. The union also said it would stop using all Yahoo!-operated services...

The latest on Yahoo's activities in China:

A human rights group launched a campaign Thursday against Yahoo Inc. on grounds the U.S. search company assisted China's communist government with torture by revealing information that led to the arrest of dissidents.

The World Organization for Human Rights USA said businesses that operate abroad need to be more aware of their responsibilities.

"They should not be participating actively in promoting and encouraging major human rights abuses," said Morton Sklar, executive director for the Washington, D.C.-based organization...
