The online address of the underworld goes up for sale Friday, in the latest manifestation of the boom in Internet domain names.

Hell.com is scheduled to be offered in a live auction organizers predict will draw bids of more than $1 million. The hot market for domain names, the addresses people often type in for Web sites, is being fueled by the surge in Internet advertising and the ease with which domain owners can make money from ads brokered by the likes of Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc...

Now someone who buys Hell.com "has the opportunity to redefine what hell means, at least on the Internet," says Monte Cahn, Moniker chief executive. The commercial possibilities of Hell.com are less obvious than some of the other big-ticket domain names, though Mr. Cahn says it has strong possibilities for videogame or social-networking sites...

Many attendees commented on the large increase in the number of business professionals who now attend; Wall Street  analysts, representatives from major investment groups, Madison Avenue marketers, IP attorneys and all the rest. As one speaker commented from the dais one day, “Wow, this crowd is dressed a lot better than it used to be!,” a wry reference to the recent past when most of the audience favored Hawaiian shirts, blue jeans and sandals.

It’s another sign of the domain industry coming of age...

It’s not surprising that Schumacher also likes the idea of spreading the money among multiple domains because Sedo has proven it works while building a dominant position in country code sales with major ccTLD extensions like .de, .co.uk, .eu and .us.  Schumacher showed an interesting slide that used stock terminology, Buy, Hold or Sell, to express his outlook for various extensions. His Buy  column included .us and other major ccTLDs, .info, .mobi and IDN’s (International Domain Names). His Hold column listed .eu, .com  and .net and his Sell column contained .biz, .cc, .ws and .tv...
