Secure FTP

In response to yesterday's post, Randy asks: "Is there a reason why the HOME edition doesn't support Secure FTP?"

WS_FTP Home has some security features (FTPS and SSL) but the Professional version has additional security features (SFTP, SSH and HTTPS).

So, why less security in the Home version? WS_FTP Home provides more of the basic FTP features and many of the advanced features (including SFTP) are additional and exclusive benefits of the Professional version.

This is what bothers me. Filezilla offers SFTP for free. It is not clear to me what 95LE offers. The home version doesn't even offer SFTP, although FTPS (AKA FTP/SSL) is acceptable (maybe).

Why not just get FileZilla? It supports SFTP, which is probably about as secure as SSH, but easier to use.

I respectully disagree with Regi. We are talking about several things, but it's not that difficult to minimize the issue.

Security through obfuscaton is when you say things like 99% of server attacks come from "x." The problem is when the hackers change tactics, because we know they always will. FTP has a long track record of security flaws. There is really no need to use it. SFTP encrypts your information and a whole lot more. Despite the similarity in names, it is a completely different beast.

It doesn't matter what the program supports if your host doesn't support it.  You should know that MrO since you're using FTP with your GoDaddy web hosting account.

SFTP also has a long history of flaws and the SFTP port is attacked constantly on every server on the web.

The big question is:  Why are you using FTP Mr. O?  Shouldn't you practice what you preach?

NO! I stopped using GoDaddy for my website! The account I have now is just for Windows practice.

It is impossible to be 100% secure unless you unplug from the Internet. Pointing out that no software is 100% secure clouds the issue. The fact is FTP was not designed to use it the way it is used and it has a much worse track record. Considering that SFTP looks exactly the same, why not use it?

I can check the Windows GoDaddy account later. I'm working on other stuff right now. I'm not saying it doesn't have SFTP. I'm just saying I didn't bother to check since it's just for practicing.

Uh, okay, I am clueless when it comes to FTP. Why would you need an acct for practicing? Seems kind of straightforward to me, bearing in mind that I really don't know what I'm talking about.

I practice with building Windows websites and working with Microsoft's database.

I tried to find info on GoDaddy security, and they don't even talk about it. The help for security is completely blank:
