Studies going back over 50 years have repeatedly arrived at the same conclusion -- racists have lower IQs than non-racists. The average intelligence quotient (IQ) of all members of the human race is 100 on the Stanford-Binet scale, as illustrated in the bell curves in the figure below. The average IQ of racists is up to 4 IQ points less than this (Montagu 1952 & 1988, Allport 1946, Frenkel-Brunswick and Sanford 1945). The reasons this is true are not entirely clear. Which is why there's such a huge conformist majority.  No surprise here.

Yep. The easier it is to do, the more the majority wants to do it. Think of advertising, whether it's for food products, cars, or pharmaceuticals. It's EAASSSYYY!

It's easier to fit into a pre-defined group, a majority religion, a social layer... you don't have to think about it at all. You just slide right in there and are instantly justified, sanctified, and otherwise marked as correct and superior.

If you read a lot of slave narratives from the late 19th century, you'll see a class of poor white folks who are especially cruel to anyone who's not white, when the white upperclass picks on them. Sort of a way for them to feel more important than someone, when their own perceived "lot" thinks of them as worthless.

When I find out someone I know fairly well is a racist, I back off. Sometimes I let them know they're not being cool--but in the end, it's so hard to change other people that I disassociate myself from them and end it.

How can I be friends with someone who harbors such hatred for other people?

So far, I've only had to do that with two people in my lifetime--and I feel much better for it.

I agree, Thentavius, as I know you know. I am also careful as to what I join----------i.e., forums, etc. I will not stay in a forum or other org if I am aware that there are many racist or anti-semitic members .

I am a firm believer in the saying, "When you lay down with dogs............".
