You love handmade home items, but sometimes hitting the flea markets and crafts bazaars is just too much. We understand, and so do the folks at Etsy.com, a hip online community where you can buy and sell handmade goodies. The buying process works similarly to eBay: You can bid or purchase on the spot.

Search by categories such as furniture, ceramics and even "geekery" (aka electronics and gadgets), or by color or location of artist. The "geolocator" map is cool if frustratingly difficult to navigate, but we still found an insane number of local craftsters hawking their wares...

Jessica Schleicher’s grandmothers taught her how to crochet when she was a kid. But the 27-year-old Poughquag resident’s creations, which include a dino baby bonnet and a guitar choker, are far from granny-like.

“I don’t like afghans and I don’t like doilies,” said Schleicher, a wife and mother of a 4-year-old.

She is part of the new breed of indie crafter who sells handmade, quirky items to a worldwide audience through individual Web sites and online marketplaces such as Etsy.com...

The site, which was founded in June 2005 to strike a balance between 21st-century consumerism and the artisan-rich 19th century, has a growing community of about 200,000 users, 38,000 of whom are sellers...

Anyone who has spent a weekend at an art show sitting behind a table of handmade wares knows how challenging it can be to make a living off their craft.

But Lisa Price, 29, appears to have hit her crafty stride with the aid of a Web site that gives her access to a global market of craft lovers without leaving her Grand Rapids home.

For 20 cents per item, Price can list her block-printed tea towels ($11.95) and aprons ($38) for sale in her Etsy.com shop, called artgoodies. She set up shop in July and said she generates about half of her income from sales through the site...

Kimberly Smith of Kent was looking for a creative outlet and maybe a little extra cash when she quit her job as a clothing designer at Nordstrom to stay home with her two young boys.

She took her computer, a heat press and "a pretty sarcastic sense of humor" into her basement office and started cranking out T-shirts and baby onesies after her kids were asleep each night...

Nearly 725 sales later, Smith's little basement venture is bringing in nearly as much as she earned working full time — "except I get to do this in the hours that suit me."...
