Jack Carroll is certainly no criminal genius. On Monday the 22-year-old Liverpudlian was convicted of destroying an abandoned Vauxhall with the help of a Warrior armoured vehicle, a crime he would have got away with but for one tiny error.

For Carroll performed his stunt, at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire, in full view of a sniggering friend filming him on his mobile phone, and one of them thought it a good idea to post the footage on the internet video-sharing site YouTube...

Less intelligent members of Britain's criminal community used to get caught by showing off in pubs, or bragging to cellmates; today, the internet provides them with an open own goal at which a surprising number cannot resist a shot.

It started in 2002, with the introduction of camera phones and picture messaging, giving rise to the phenomenon of "happy slapping" - teenage boys filming each other slapping, beating up and, in one case murdering, members of the public...
