Managing your business remotely

We all dream of being able to walk away from our businesses while they run smoothly by themselves. A friend of mine manages to do just that. He's done a seachange and his businesses continue to thrive in the city. He now lives on the north coast of New South Wales and manages his two Sydney-based businesses remotely.

He travels to Sydney once every five weeks or so to meet with staff and does everything else over the phone and email. So how can you make this happen?...

Hold regular virtual meetings
Even though you are somewhere else, these days it's very easy to hold a remote meeting. You can do a conference call with staff - which is free on Skype. Hold a weekly virtual meeting to debrief on what's been achieved the week before and plan for the week ahead. Depending on the experience and initiative of your staff, you may then need to document this and ask for daily updates...
