Coverage of the eBay Live! 2006 'Meet 'n Greet' 

The sold-out eBay Live 2006 may start officially Tuesday morning, but at Monday night's 4th annual "Meet 'n Greet," sponsored by BuySafe, eBayers were already chatting each other up like crazy. Most of them were decked out in colorful beach clothing, in keeping with the bright eBay logo colors as well as the name of the venue (The Beach). Parrots perched atop hats, many men sported floral Hawaiian shirts, and ladies wore anything from grass skirts-n-coconuts to crazy rhinestone sunglasses...

Here's a taste of what went on behind the headlines at the Las Vegas conference:

-- A smattering of eBay users wore caps made of aluminum foil during the event that were apparently intended to deflect any brainwashing by the company. The hats -- bizarre as they seemed -- illustrate how, despite eBay's popularity, some of its users are deeply unhappy about everything from higher listing fees implemented on the Web site last year to online fraud.

-- North Korea is better, at least, at turning stadiums into human flash-card shows. An effort by eBay to get part of the crowd at the keynote speech to spell out "eBay" in giant letters fell flat because the cards flashed were too small and lighting in the arena was bad.

Alibaba set up shop inside a restaurant at the Mandalay Bay resort, where the eBay convention was held, and offered free lunch to eBay sellers who stopped by to learn about Alibaba's products.
