Re: eBay Live! 2006 in Las Vegas on June 13-15
A smattering of eBay users wore caps made of aluminum foil during the event that were apparently intended to deflect any brainwashing by the company. The hats -- bizarre as they seemed -- illustrate how, despite eBay's popularity, some of its users are deeply unhappy about everything from higher listing fees implemented on the Web site last year to online fraud.

Quote:Darlene reminds me of many eBay buyers--you know, the ones who are unable to read item descriptions. The majority of her "pink" posts that I've seen rarely address the original question that was asked--which I guess is to be expected since that's how eBay's customer service has always operated: This is also the system they chose for the new EE search Kim: http://forums.ebay.com/db1/thread.jspa?t...2000136318&tstart=0&mod=1149984694218 |

Speaking of eBay...
I just had a friend call me and ask if I would help her to sell on eBay. I said, "Sure!" After I explained a few things about eBay to her, she decided to sell her wares at Amazon. |

What's eBay? ;D
I thought I already told you: eBay is a message board with a really crappy selection of smilies. ;D

Re: eBay Live! 2006 in Las Vegas on June 13-15
Well, we're home from Vegas/non-eBay Live! and as usual, I was ready to come home after two days in that town, but we had a dinner appt with Patrice on Wednesday, and Phil wanted to stay a while longer after that *for some reason*... :
Left ABQ Sunday evening at 6pm, expecting to hit Vegas around 3am. I like to drive at night, so was looking forward to the cooler temp'd drive. I set the cruise control to 75 and we barrelled through mile after mile, making good time right along with the semi's. (Thentavious, I honked my horn at you as I went flying past Grants...) 20 miles east of Kingman, just about at the end of the last winding, curvy mountain pass *downhill*, suddenly up in front were flashing red/blue/white lights in the right lane, and a very brave soul frantically flagging down the traffic that came around the turn. I eased into the left lane and *gently* slammed on my brakes, coasting past the flagman and not quite coming to a stop, confused WTH all the time, and suddenly up ahead around the next turn was at least two visual miles of red tail lights -- two lanes full. All stop stock still. Obviously a closed highway due to a multiple-car wreck. *sigh* There was nothing we could do except turn off the engine and try to get some sleep. Thank goodness it was (according to the car's nifty 'outside temp' reading) a pleasant 54 outside, so we could keep the windows closed and not take in diesel exhaust the whole time. We were awakened at 3:45am to proceed forth. Arrived in Vegas at 6:00am Monday morning.... Phil decided he wanted to tag along to everything (against the initially agreed-upon house rules), so off we went on our exciting high-society night-life excursions. We were obviously late for the pre-Meet&Greet cocktail party at Nefertiti's Lounge at the Luxor. Nobody was there except a few couple glaring at each other over their drinks. > Very disappointing, as I had actually donned a nice pair of dress sandals and earrings and all to try to appear somewhat socially presentable, and after the walk from the car to the lounge, my feet were killing me and my ears were pinched purple. I sat down at the nearest slot machine and pulled my tennies out of my purse and got comfortable again, also ditching the jewelry. : Arrived at the Meet&Greet at The Beach around 7:30pm. It was scheduled to start at 7:00, so -- expecting there to be *thousands* attending, I figgered there'd still be a line waiting to get in. You know, Guest Book signing and all... Nada. Went right in. Was not met by WELCOME! /smiles/get-your-nametag-here/or anything. I had made myself a self-stick name tag with my ebay ID on it, which was 2" x 3" (fairly big) with large printing. Figgered that'd be the only way to identify anyone was with their ebay ID. (No, I did NOT make a CheshireCat mask! ) Well. Turns out the M&G's nametags were about 1.5" round, with a tiny space at the bottom where they had printed folks' FIRST NAME only. HUH?? I mean, who the heck is Mortimer, and who cares?? So the place was almost pitch black inside, the music was so loud I was considering putting in my trusty cotton ear plugs, and you couldn't read anyone's name no matter how hard you tried.... And if you think I was going to get that close to some of those *men*... well... Phil and I circled the club. We noted a few yayhoos that had dressed up in Hawaiian shirts/leis/dresses. Most folks were sitting two or three to a little round table, not talking, with big frowns -- or standing around not talking, with big frowns. A few people seemed to know each other and were carrying on conversations, but not much. Around to the back, on its own table, was FOOD!!! -- but it was only two casserole dishes in size, and they were both empty and ugly with dried-up residue. Several someones LIVE then came on stage and made a bunch of announcements, one of which was that they had run out of nametags/pins the first 15 minutes...they had only made 500, and were very surprised at the huge turnout... : Then they started pulling names out of a hat for their supposed *raffles* that most had apparently entered (*I* didn't know anything about those, of course...) Lots of cheering. A few hard-to-understand small speeches with more cheering. We left. When Patrice and I finally made a connection via cell phone on Tuesday, I informed her she hadn't missed anything...... Made arrangements with Patrice to meet downtown at the Main Street Station Garden Buffet on Wednesday evening. When she and hubby arrived, she said she had met Brits Stephanie (denim dreaming) --now living in Ohio? -- and her mother Felicity from the UK. So we waited for them to arrive and were a sixsome for dinner. Thoroughly enjoyed all the good company! Not to mention the good eats... When I got home here, I checked my messages and saw that I missed someone staying at the Bali who wanted to join us. So very sorry, as the message was sent after I had already left ABQ and was on the road. And the message disappeared here now, too...how'd that happen? Anyway. Patrice, Stephanie and Felicity all seemed to agree that there wasn't a whole lot of rahrah at this ebay gathering. Haven't heard anything about the Gala on Thursday evening, so don't know if that was a success or not.... I lost my $1 on the toopid slots. > Can't believe I didn't buy anything, either, on our excursions around town junking.... |

Ebay Live #1..... I do remember the lunch buffet, though. There was a long table with all kinds of food, but they had everyone start at both ends of the table to fill their plates. When hundreds of people started to meet in the middle, it was pandemonium.
The more things change - the more they stay the same. I want a tin foil hat.

Everything in the "vintage", "second-hand", "thrift" stores in NYC is priced at about 10X what it would be anywhere else. |

Re: eBay Live! 2006 in Las Vegas on June 13-15
We were in Vegas in January also. I made a list of every thrift/second hand store in the city and we hit the streets one day to peruse them all. Never again. There was absolutely nothing for us. Nada. Worse than ABQ.
The *Antique Malls* are a different story. Prices vary, depending on which one you hit. The 'unkempt' ones are our best bet -- you know, the ones where you have to rummage some to see what's hidden behind something else... or it's 75% off everything in the booth... I guess we cleaned 'em all out in January. Good thing. I need to sell, not buy... |
