Quote:millions are probably hoping this will
bring paypal to it's knees.

I think the only ways to use GBuy are 1.  payment for Google Base item 2. payment for item advertised with AdWords.  If you don't buy AdWords or sell on Base you're SOL.

Re: Google 's GBuy Payment Service Prepares to Battle for Marketshare with PayPal
I wasn't sure how that worked and personally don't need it seeing as we have a merchant account.

But I would still root for the poor soles who want it so bad.

Hey maybe it will get some off their duffs and they will start listing on GBase too.

Then they can have their pie and chips.

Like the gecko dude says. It's pie and chips....

FOR FREE.   LOL

Google GBuy vs. eBay PayPal battle could benefit smaller ecommerce merchants
More press coverage of the upcoming GBuy vs. PayPal battle:

Quote: The battle to control your online wallet is about to get a lot bloodier. More than a year after search giant Google (GOOG) was rumored to be preparing an online payment service, GBuy finally looks set to launch in test mode as early as June 28. But while Google may have quickly become the dominant force in search advertising, it's unlikely there will be one winner in online payments anytime soon—if ever...

Whatever the outcome, this battle is bound to benefit consumers and merchants. By providing new and cheaper alternatives to credit cards for buying items online, these and other new online payment services could give buyers more confidence in a wider range of e-commerce sites. And coupled with e-commerce services from eBay, Google, Amazon.com (AMZN), and others, they're likely to help smaller merchants who can't afford a credit-card merchant account to compete with bigger players...

full article: http://www.businessweek.com/investor/con...081708.htm

Quote:Ten Possible Consequences of Google's GBuy

Below, ten possible effects that GBuy might have on Google, search and other companies.

1. Google changes how AdWords are bought. As more and more advertisers use GBuy, Google will collect data on which adWords are most effective at converting clicks, and which clicks convert to sales. Google would then be able to set adWords prices based on the average ROI to advertisers for that word.

2. Google personalizes your search results like Amazon. You may start seeing "people who searched for this also search for..." Google may be reticent to do too much with its core search though. This feature could be a powerful add-on, like Google Desktop search.

3. eBay steps up their advertising campaign and partnership with Yahoo...

full article: http://ibmwatch.eweek.com/blogs/google_w...11115.aspx

Quote:From a merchant advertiser perspective, Google aims to lock-in merchants as AdWords customers by not charging AdWords clients for GBuy payment processing. Additionally, Google is setting-up a two-tier system for its AdWords clients to favor those that are also GBuy merchants:..

Google's incentives-based launch of its GBuy online payments system is designed, in one fell swoop, to gain and retain more AdWords customers, to set-up GBuy as the go-to default, and perhaps exclusive, online merchant "checkout process," to undercut eBay and Amazon.com, to usurp online consumers and to data mine consumer buying behavior...

It won't be my default as long as my merchant account is 2.20% and GBuy is 2.50%.

Ditto on sticking with the merchant account as the default. Lower rates win every time--not to mention shopping cart integration.  If Google develops an API for 3rd party shopping cart scripts like Zen, osCommerce, X-Cart to connect to their cart then they could definitely win some business from the storeowners who offer PayPal as an option and are paying PP's higher 2.9% + $0.30 rates.

2.50% is if you don't buy Adwords.  It's free if you buy them.

You can also sign up when you list an item on Google Base but the item has to be purchased directly on base and you pay 2.5% +$0.25

Re: Google 's GBuy Payment Service Prepares to Battle for Marketshare with PayPal
I did sign up yesterday but will still stick to the MA as my default too for now.

If it can be integrated as said earlier, with shopping
carts set ups they will get more biz.

Already fired off an e mail to my provider to see if they were going to be
adding it to their list of gateways.

They don't seem to be too interested in it and are calling it a
" clone of PayPal's Express checkout system".

They did say they will take a look at it next week but said to
be prepared to be very, disappointed.

I was looking at some of the G development tools but I'm not getting into all that just to use their service.

They either need to come out with an integrated cart system like PP has or it may turn out to be just another flop as PayPal's Express checkout was.

Ditto.  Over 95% of payments on our websites and over 90% on Overstock are going through our merchant account.  If Zencart or Marketworks added Google Checkout integration we'd add it as a payment option but very few off-ebay buyers want to pay with PayPal (or Moneybookers which we also offer on our websites), and I doubt if many will want to use Google Checkout either.
