so ebay makes money.

Analysts disagree on whether eBay's reported reaction to Google Base is warranted.

"EBay is exposed. A lot of people are getting to the eBay properties through search engines, and Google is the leading one. All Google would have to do is intercept at the front end those people who are searching for things to purchase and redirect them to Google properties," said Rob Enderle from Enderle Group.

With Base, Google is clearly positioning itself as an eBay-like marketplace, a strategy that meshes well with Google's goal of linking users with information, in this case about products, Enderle said.

Others don't feel Google Base significantly threatens eBay's marketplace and PayPal online payment unit, and say that challenging eBay is difficult and costly, even for Google...

Friday's rumors of a potential tie-up between eBay and Yahoo, if they were to come to fruition, would drive an interesting shift in China's e-commerce market, as the Yahoo portion of Alibaba in China would then be partnered with its primary rival, eBay Eachnet....

Sometimes it's hard to make heads or tails of all this.
Unless you speculate about how back room deals to divided
up customers globally could be a possibility.

In the US right now ebay are in "talks" with Yahoo and Microsoft to try
and beat out Google. (Who apparently ebay is seeing now as a possible rival).

In the US Yahoo all of a sudden started to charge for it's auction
service and for many, Yahoo auctions all of a sudden became dead.
(I note this because when we first started auctions we were using Yahoo
primarily because it was FREE and were doing OK with sales).
Soon as Yahoo started to charged to list. Things dropped off real fast.
As if someone turned off the feed to the searches?

Then Yahoo started to charge a monthly fee for Pay  Direct,
(Certainly knowing that people would not do so and then bye bye PayDirect).
NOTE all the above is in pretty close a time frame I think, when ebay
decided not to compete with Yahoo and get out of Japan.
Yahoo is number one there now right?

Next PayPal (an ebay co.) is now on the scene and integrated
with Yahoo auctions US. (Interesting)


What I'm getting at is that there seems to be some games
(dividing up customers) in the auction world.

In China Yahoo Messenger is integrated with ebay rival Taobao.

In Japan Yahoo beat out ebay and ebay just pulled out right?
At the same time (or close to it) in the US Yahoo Auctions becomes a
virtual ghost town as if Yahoo auctions just pulled out of the US
while ebay continued to gain ground in the US.

I can see the back room negotiations now.

ebay says:  OK Yahoo we will get out of Japan.
There is no since in us both wasting millions trying to compete with each other here.
We will back down and BTW we are getting ready to buy PayPal and we both already know it is the number one choice of buyers to make auction payments.

Yahoo says: OK ebay we see your point and you are very strong.
Tell you what.  We will significantly reduce our Yahoo Auctions presents
in the US. We don't dare just shut it down that would look too suspicious.
We will even up you one. After we start to charge for YA and direct
we know people will run away.  So you get the US and we will even work with you
and integrate PayPal into the (almost non existent Y auctions).

What do you say do we have a deal.

ebay says: Yes that sounds reasonable to us. Now one other thing.
All bets are off in China. That is a free for all agreed.

Yahoo says: Agreed.

And here is where we are today.

ebay has US market
Yahoo has Japanese market.

Alibaba.com trying to hold on to home market in China.

ebay wants it and Yahoo wants it.

Then there is a third player throwing a curve ball at ebay...Google?

Something just does not seem right when competing companies
(who should be bitter rivals) also have alliances
and possible back room turf agreements.
