If Edit is an SEO genius, then generating traffic should be quick work for him.

*cough*

Just like teaching that college's IT department...

The only reason I'm participating at all is to satify my Karma, and feel free to laugh, roll on the floor, etc -- but I was blamed by name (along with others) for the downfall of wp1, and even though I consider myself to be way more intelligent to buy into that, it still bugs me sometimes if I end up in a critical mode about lots of things without supporting any of them, which I kind of think is important to do, especially being very anti-ebay.

You know what? You were absolutely, positively NOT responsible for the downfall of WP1 in ANY way. If Ray, or anyone else, says that--they're vindictive and stupid.

It's perfectly acceptable to ask honest questions, with the hope of improving the experience for everyone involved.

RAY is responsible for the downfall of WP1.

MY god. Someone manually listed 2,288 items? I don't even have words for that.

There was a post a few pages back about being asked to pay in advance for the next month when closing a store.

Silly question here, WP only accepts Paypal for payment, what happens when sellers don't have balances anymore because they don't have sales?  That is going to hit pretty fast with the lack of outside traffic and buyers.  Poor Ray will be sending out lots of his threatening emails  Laughing7  oh wait, I forgot it is a trust based community, I bet he will trust the stores to pay,  Happy001 Happy001 Happy001

RAY is responsible for the downfall of WP1. [/quote]

Specifically the combination of his lies to potential users about the infrastructure he had built (I believe he said it could power a small nation) and his very poor choice of software killed WP1.  "Trolls" had nothing to do with the site's closing...they were just a convenient excuse to cover up the real reason: Ray HAD to shut the site down because at 10K listings it was already stretched beyond capacity and there was no way the site could handle any additional growth.  The only solution was to either completely rewrite the crap script he had bought or get a new script--both of which would have taken months...or more precisely, did take until May 2006 when WP reopened with new software.

I can't imagine it either.  The last time I saw eBay's Sell Your Item form was 2001.  It's been strictly bulk listing since then.  The largest WP store has almost 4800 items. :blinkie:
"Well, Jay was so giddy that someone named Jay was involved with this site we posted our first non-eBay listing in 3 years here at Lunarbid (we tried two items at Yahoo once upon a time, they bombed)" -Marie posting in a LunarBid thread at OTWA in 2005 wins the award for 'most moronic reason ever given for choosing a venue"

Absolutely, completey, positively the best succinct account of the whole fiasco.

100% true. The so-called "trolls" (translation: curious unblinded business people, experienced auction folks, and question-askers) were a mass scapegoat.

It's likely we'll be able to cut and paste the description above and apply it to the end of WP2, as well.

As for the 4800 listings...  there's some serious insanity out there. I think even the Dalai Lama, Mother Theresa, and Ghandi wouldn't have the patience to do that.

What is the short version as to why Ray has been renamed "edit."

My apologies.  I've been gone for a while.  Tooooooo much reading required to play catch up.

Big Grin Someone wrote on the WP forums that Ray Romeo still had an ebay store open and thought it curious. Has his name up on the subject line. *Karen* changed the name to ~~edit~~, stating that it was against WP rules to publicly print personal names.  Big Grin

WEIRD!

I could understand if I posted YOUR name, but Ray's?  Really weird.

Thanks for the explanation, Stardust.

Speaking of Stardust... I had a good time in that casino.  It is going to be imploded November 1st.
